Who it's for
Any organisation that serves African Australians.
- Community associations: Kenyan, Nigerian, Sudanese, Somali, Congolese, Zimbabwean or any other. Put your independence day, language classes and AGM on Mavuno, and your team can fix the details when they change.
- Community councils. Africa Day, awards nights and football cups each get an event page, and your member associations can follow you.
- Churches and mosques. People new to the city can find your services, youth nights and iftars without being in your group chat first.
- Women's and youth groups. Each information session or class can be an event, so you know how many people are coming.
- Student associations. Your committee changes every year, but the page doesn't: this year's owner hands it to next year's president in Settings, with no passwords to pass on.
- Event organisers and professional networks. Festivals, galas, tournaments and networking nights get a page people can RSVP to and add to their calendar.
What your organisation gets
A page your team runs
The page has your logo, city and what you do. Owners, admins and editors run it, each with their own account. A verified badge shows once our moderators have checked it's really you.
Event pages
People mark Going or Interested, add the event to their calendar and see who else is going. You can set a capacity, keep an online meeting link for the people who are going, and add your ticket link. Anyone can browse upcoming events by city. Events go up straight away for most organisations; a few wait for a moderator to review them first.
Posts
Post news as your organisation. Your followers see it in Following, newest first, and you can post in your city's space once you've joined it. Members can translate a post with one tap.
Jobs and opportunities
Jobs, internships, scholarships, grants, mentoring and volunteering, posted under your organisation's name. They're listed together on the opportunities page.
How to promote a community event for free
None of this needs Mavuno:
- Put every detail on one page. Date, time, venue, cost, the ticket link, who it's for and who to ask. When something changes, change it there, instead of correcting a flyer in five group chats.
- Share that link everywhere. Your WhatsApp groups, Facebook page, Instagram bio and printed flyers, and ask your committee to share it in their own groups.
- Add it to public calendars. State calendars such as Queensland's multicultural events calendar and Western Australia's Office of Multicultural Interests calendar list community events. Check your council's What's On too, though some, like Brisbane City Council's, only list events at council venues or in council programs.
- Remind people the week before and again on the day, with the same link.
- After the event, thank your volunteers and sponsors, share photos of people who agreed to be in them, and announce the next date.
Event ideas for student associations and community groups
- A welcome night or O-Week stall for people new to the city or the university.
- A food night where each family or community brings a dish from home.
- A football or netball cup between community teams.
- A careers evening where members in work talk about how they got there, and look over CVs.
- An information session with a health, legal or settlement service, in the languages your members speak.
- Study sessions in exam weeks, and a family picnic or braai at the end of term.
- An end-of-year dinner, with the AGM before it so people stay for both.
City spaces
Mavuno started in Brisbane and is for the whole country. Each city has a space where organisations can post what's on: Brisbane, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Townsville, Sydney, Western Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra, Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Darwin.
Set up your page
- Sign in, or join Mavuno, then go to Settings › Organisations.
- Fill in your organisation's name, city and details, and select Create organisation.
- Open its settings and Add the people who'll help run it. Each of them accepts in their own Settings.
- Go to a new event, choose your organisation as the Host, select Create event, then share its link.
It takes about ten minutes. The organisations help article has the details, or email us and we'll set it up with you.
Privacy and safety
- No member lists. Other members, your team included, never see anyone's email address, and we'll never give your organisation, or anyone else, a list of your members.
- Who sees an RSVP. Your team sees who said Going or Interested. Other signed-in members see who's going, not who's interested. Without an account, people see the event but not who's going.
- Online links show only to your team and the people who are going.
- 16 and over. Mavuno accounts are for people 16 and older. Anyone can open your event pages and posts without an account, so families can still see what's on, but please don't run sign-ups at events for under-16s.
- Reports. A person on our team reads every report, and a block or a mute applies everywhere. See the community rules.
- No precise location. Mavuno knows the city someone chooses, never where they are, and photos lose their location before they're stored.
Mavuno is run by Mentors Outreach, a community organisation in Queensland, and never sells anyone's information. The privacy policy says where information is stored and who helps us run Mavuno.
Questions organisers ask
Is it really free?
Yes. There's nothing to pay, for organisations or for members.
Is it only for Brisbane?
No. Organisations anywhere in Australia can have a page.
Do we need to be an incorporated association?
No. Committees, informal groups, church ministries and student clubs are all welcome.
Can several of us run the page?
Yes. Add your committee as owners, admins or editors, each with their own account, so the page never depends on one person.
Do we have to leave Facebook or WhatsApp?
No. Keep them, and share your Mavuno event links there.
Can we sell tickets or take payments?
No. Keep using Humanitix, TryBooking, Eventbrite or whatever you use now, and add the ticket link to your event.
